How to Run a Bed & Breakfast

How to Run a Bed & Breakfast

There's no doubt that bed and breakfasts are popular all over the US and you might even run across one in Saudi Arabia. What makes them so popular? A comfortable and private guest room, personal service, private bathroom, and a restful environment are some of the premiere reasons people choose a bed and breakfast instead of a motel.

Have you ever considered establishing your own bed and breakfast inn? It's not as routine as decorating a small number of rooms, cooking a few meals and opening up your doors. There are a couple of requirements to meet before moving on with your own bed and breakfast ideals.

One very valuable way to get started is to get some experience in a prosperous bed and breakfast. Spend three or four months with a skilled innkeeper and you'll see first hand everything that is required for owning your own B&B.

Still considering it? Then, you'll need to decide whether or not you have the character it takes to operate a bed and breakfast. You'll be working with all kinds of people from all fiancial backgrounds every day. Take into consideration also that you'll be getting up before dawn, advertising, cooking, dealing with contractors and vendors, answering the phone, marketing your business, cleaning, completing paperwork and interacting with your guests.

Consider the best spot for your bed and breakfast. Not only that, but you should decide whether you'll live on site or in a separate location. If you are inside the city limits, you will need to ask about zoning regulations that govern businesses at your chosen site. Make sure you'll be able to serve the food you are planning to prepare for your guests. Figure out how many guests you can accommodate in your B&B.

A business plan is key to your success. A great resource is the American Bed and Breakfast Association. They will provide all the bits and pieces that you'll need to set up your business. Marketing and advertising decisions need to be initiated well ahead of opening. Make sure your fees are competitive with others in the area.

Your guests are obviously the number one priority in running your B&B. Treat each guest as someone special and appreciated. Excellent service and sweating the details are necessary to a prosperous B&B. The rooms need to be absolutely clean and cozy with nice decor. Make breakfast memorable, complete with hot and cold items, and (of course) be delicious. Guests who feel as though their needs have been selflessly met will praise your B&B to their co-workers and they will also try to come back again. Come up with a special event or activity the guests will remember.

A bed and breakfast is a special type of business that will pull people from all over the world to your doorstep. Consider the cost to your pocketbook and marriage, and then move forward if you are sure that it is the right choice for you. Above all, take joy in your endeaver!
